Try a Rowing Machine for the Best Workout
A complete workout program includes aerobic exercise and strength training. A rowing machine workout does both at the same time. It works nearly all your muscle groups and improves upper body, lower body and core strength. And it gets your heart pumping, which means it's an excellent aerobic exercise. A rowing machine workout is also low-impact, so it doesn't stress your joints. And it burns up those calories faster than anything except swimming.
Whether you use a rowing machine at a gym or you're buying your own, you'll get the best workout if you choose the right machine:
- Make sure the seat on the rowing machine is comfortable. It should be large enough to accommodate your, um - spread, and have enough cushioning for your bony backside. A little back support is nice, too.
- Make sure the footstops are large enough to accommodate your feet and can be positioned comfortably.
- If you're extra large (horizontally or vertically) or extra small, make sure your rowing machine adjusts to fit well
- Check to ensure that the seat glides smoothly. If it moves unevenly it may stress your back or other muscles
- Check out the bells and whistles, like computer functions, resistance adjustments and other functions
Check with your doctor before you start any fitness program, especially if you are overweight, out of shape or have health problems. Have a trainer show you how to use a rowing machine properly; if you have poor body mechanics you could end up with an aching back. If you have the go-ahead from your doctor, you know how to do it right, and you have the right machine, almost anybody can enjoy the benefits of a rowing workout.
