You also know that your sister is more likely to have bulimia nervosa if you or any member of your family has suffered from this eating disorder.

Bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder in which a person binge eats. Binge eating is the act of consuming large quantities of food in a short period of time. After binge eating a person with bulimia nervosa will then purge or eliminate the food they have consumed in order not to gain weight. A bulimic person may purge by making themselves vomit or by taking laxatives to induce a bowel movement before the food can be digested.

How do you know if your sister has bulimia nervosa? It is difficult to tell at first. Begin by looking for signs of purging. A person with bulimia nervosa may have a need to use the bathroom often, either to vomit or have a bowel movement.

How do you approach your sister about this problem? Gently. Set aside a time when the two of you can be alone. Express your concern and love for her. Tell her the signs you have seen her exhibit. Suggest your sister seek the help of a medical professional such as a counselor; even offer to go with her for her first visit.
