Mediterranean Diet
The Mediterranean Diet is not a diet in the common use of the word. The Mediterranean Diet is a traditional way of eating, a lifestyle, if you will. The Mediterranean Diet simply reflects the lifestyle and foods eaten by those living in countries that bordered the Mediterranean Sea in and around the 1960's.
What is so special about the Mediterranean Diet of the 1960's? The diet consisted of what was readily available to the cultures of that time; grains, fruits, beans, vegetables, fish, olive oil, garlic, red wine. Due to work ethic and the economy, exercise was a part of everyday life in that time and place, also.
It is important to note that those peoples, who followed the Mediterranean Diet out of necessity, were very healthy people. They were commonly slender of build, had fewer incidents of heart disease and chronic illnesses and greater life expectancy. Exactly what we are all looking for when we think about dieting. Most of us want to look great, feel great, and be healthy.
The positive effects of a diet like the Mediterranean Diet have been long reported by the American medical community. How often have you heard of Omega - 3 fatty acids and the benefits of eating fish? Or that olive oil is better for you than vegetable oil? Most of us love it when a news reporter tells us that red wine in moderation is good for us.
The Mediterranean Diet is not a quick fix; it is a life style change. A lifestyle that benefited the Mediterranean people of 50 years ago and can benefit all of us today.
