Computer Security

In today's society computer security is a topic frequently discussed and commonly needed. Your personal computer security is important to you. Perhaps you are a victim of identity fraud or know someone who is. Maybe you or someone you know has had a computer crash due to a virus. Whatever the case, some basic computer security is necessary if the Internet is used on your computer.

Frequently, a firewall is the first line of defense for your computer. A firewall provides computer security by creating several layers of defense between your computer and the Internet. Firewalls occasionally come pre-installed on your computer, they can be included as part of a computer security package by your Internet or provider, or they can be purchased separately. The more private/personal information you keep on your computer, the more complex a firewall you will want to install.

The next aspect of computer security you will want to be included on your system is an anti-virus program. Anti-virus protection provides your computer security from Trojans, worms, Spam, and malware. Anti-virus programs are often available from your e-mail or Internet provider, or can be purchased.

Nothing can help maintain your computer security more than common sense. Use only strong 8 character passwords that are a mix of letters and numbers. Don't provide personal banking, credit, or investment information through an e-mail. Set up a separate e-mail account for use on blogs, newsletters, etc. Do not respond to e-mails that are to good to be true. Assume your credit institution will not ask you for your password or account information, call them if you think the request is legitimate.
